Parineeti Chopra—a Bollywood star slammed the Modi-led government of India for silencing the Indian citizens for raising their voices against the injustice in the country.
Parineeti slammed the Indian government for the recent police action against the students of the Delhi universities who were protesting against the new citizenship law passed by the BJP government called the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
It is worth mentioning here that major Bollywood celebrities have not spoken a single word about the ongoing crisis in India including the Khans but Parineeti Chopra took the social media platform Twitter to condemn whatever is happening in the country.
“If this is what’s gonna happen everytime a citizen expresses their view, forget #CAB, we should pass a bill and not call our country a democracy anymore! Beating up innocent human beings for speaking their mind? BARBARIC,” she said through a tweet.
What is the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)
The amendment in the Citizenship Act of 1955 by the parliament of India providing a path to Indian citizenship for religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
The religious minorities given eligibility were listed as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians. However, Muslims were not given such eligibility after the amendment.
The beneficiaries had to have entered India on or before 31 December 2014 and should have faced “religious persecution or fear of religious persecution” in their countries of origin. The Act also relaxed residence requirement for naturalization from 11 years to five years for these migrants.
