WASA to Launch Trunk Boring Technology in Lahore

A new trunk sewer system is being laid down by the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) using the micro-tunnel boring technology. The project will have an estimated cost of Rs 12 billion.

The WASA Managing Director Syed Zahid Aziz said that the new trunk sewer line will replace the old pre-partition sewerage lines. He further informed that as the new sewerage line will be placed it will not affect the lives of the general public especially the commuters. He said that digging will be done in a planned, targeted manner without open digging.

Due to open digging and shifting of the work, laying down a sewerage line is never easy especially in a city like Lahore. But due to the introduction of micro-tunneling technology by Wasa, a huge problem will be resolved in Lahore city and a new trunk sewerage system will be laid.

WASA MD informed that micro-tunneling is basically a digging technique that is used to built small tunnels. It is used globally for water supply, sewerage system, and drainage. He said the machines for micro-tunnel boring a quite similar to the machines used in tunnel boring.

He further said that there will be no shifting of services in the project as the majority of the utility services including cables, telephone & internet lines, water lines are present around 2-3 meter in the ground.

The line will start from Larecs Colony and will cover most of the areas including Garhi Shahu, Shimla Hill, Egerton Road, Lakshami Chowk, Nabah Road, Jain Mandir, Chauburji, Samanabad and Gulshan-e-Ravi on one side and Shadman, Gulberg, Samanabad, Bagh Gull Begum, Mozang and others on the other side.
