Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has fined Local TV Channel Geo, Rs1 million for airing remarks against “Institutional Corruption” of Armed Forces of Pakistan.
PEMRA organized a meeting on Tuesday at its headquarters to discuss the various issues on agenda. During this meeting, the authority approved Council of Complaint Karachi and Council of Complaint Lahore’s recommendation to impose a fine of Rs1 million on Geo News for airing such irresponsible remarks against the armed forces.
Geo News program “Aapas Ki Baat” hosted by Muneeb Farooq and revolves around analyst Najam Sethi, gave remarks against Pakistan Army on January 9, 17, 24 and 25, 2017. PEMRA had received a number of complaints against the program aired on Geo News after that Authority took a decision to hold the meeting in order to discuss the matter in detail.
The personal hearing committee also recommended PEMRA to take action against TV channel “Starlite” for airing obscene and vulgar content on June 13, 2017. PEMRA suspended landed rights permission to private channel in response.
Moreover, the authority also approved FM radio licenses to the private news corporation and an increase of Rs1 in cable TC subscription fee. Various key figures attended the meeting including PTA Chairman, FBR Chairman, Federal information secretary, Interior ministry secretary and members from provincial governments.
