Tunisia has banned the landing of UAE Emirates Airlines in Tunis (capital city). The reason for this ban is that some Tunisian women were not allowed to board the flights of Emirates, thus causing this issue.
This move has caused a wave of anger in Tunisia. The rights group called it a “racist and discriminatory” measure. The transport ministry was clear that they will not change the step taken unless Emirates “operate flights in accordance with law and international agreements”.
As per UAE, the delay was caused by “security information”.
Emirati Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash said on Twitter, “We contacted our Tunisian brothers about security information that necessitated taking specific procedures.”
He added, “We highly value Tunisian women and respect them,” he added.
The officials of the Tunisian government said the UAE had barred the flying or transiting of Tunisian women through its territory. When the Tunisian government demanded an explanation from UAE ambassador, they said that this measure was just temporary and it has been lifted.
As per local media, the women of Tunisia were banned from boarding on Emirates for many days.
As per a news agency AFP, the delay for some of the Tunisian women has been because they had visa issues and their visa had to undergo extra examination.
After the 2011 revolution, the relations between Tunisia and UAE were strained and there was continuous effort to improve them. Moreover, Tunisia’s Ennahda party which is part of the governing coalition has some connections to Qatar, the country that has been completely cut off by UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain over its suspected support for terrorism.
