Toyota has announced to recall Prius Hybrid and Lexus NX and RX crossovers due to a defect in airbags. There are roughly 49,000 cars in the United States that are considered affected by the airbag issue. The models from 2015 and 2016 are affected.
Toyota in a statement said these vehicles have an inherent fault in their airbag electronics system, with the time being an open circuit can be created. This creates a situation where airbag warning light could lit up accidentally and when the crash event happens the side curtain and front airbags might not work properly.
However, there are no incidents reported so far due to this problem. Toyota says the dealers would check the cars, serial numbers of the airbag sensors and replace them with the new ones where needed.
The maintenance work would be done free of cost to the customers, and Toyota will start sending recall notices by mail to the car owners by the end of March.
Toyota earlier has also announced to recall 700,000 vehicles over faulty airbags in South Africa, the Japanese auto maker is regularly paying attention to airbags. The company had a servicing campaign of airbags in Pakistan during January 2016, later, the company announced to start service campaign of the airbag inflator in September 2017 focusing on models; Toyota Hilux, Rav-4, and Avensis.
