It has been decided by Indus Motor Company Ltd (IMC) to launch Toyota Vios in Pakistan and discontinue the Toyota Corolla GLi

According to a source in Toyota IMC “The company has finally decided to launch Vios in place of Corolla GLi and its top management has given the final approval.”

Adding, “The management has rejected ‘Yaris’ as it was not viable for Pakistan’s environment.”

The source has claimed that Toyota Vios will be launched by Toyota in 2019, probably in December 2019. The exact date is still unknown.

Toyota Vios is basically a compact sedan equipped with a 1.3L 4NR-FE petrol engine that produces 110 bhp. The car has an option of 7-step CVT or a five-speed manual transmission.

For the last 17 years Toyota Corolla XLi and Corolla GLi models have remained popular in Pakistan. But after Honda’s new City model and Suzuki Vitara and Cultus gained popularity things changed. Industry sources said, “The company is little perturbed and thinking to change its model which can compete with rival vehicles and regain its popularity in the Pakistani market again”.

It is reported that Toyota will introduce new 1300cc Toyota models that will compete with Honda City in Pakistan.

In August 2018 the auto sales dropped by 20% year-on-year (YoY) in Pakistan. Since FY2014-15 it is the first time that auto sales have declined. The reason being lower working days in August due to Eid-ul-Adha, declining macroeconomic environment and the effect of a law making it compulsory for car purchasers to be tax filers.

According to a dealer, “…customers are still demanding for small cars like the Vitz, and if Toyota does launch a smaller car they can compete with Honda and Suzuki in Pakistan. Otherwise, there is no future of big vehicles in Pakistan.”
