Top 10 Supercomputers of the World US regain the position

The fastest computer in the world is not always the same it keeps changing, you might have heard that the US owns the supercomputer but there are other countries as well which owns the similar ones.

China has dominated the supercomputer list for the past few years, in the newly updated list by top500, which was announced during the conference in Germany today, the US reclaims its position to be the number one and own the world’s faster supercomputer.

1 Summit

The computer is named Summit, IBM built supercomputer installed at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), USA, secures the number one spot which produces 122.3 petaflops of computing power. Summit has 4,356 nodes, each node is equipped with two 22-core Power9 CPUs, along with 6 NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPUs.

2 Sunway TaihuLight

After ranking the top supercomputer in the world Chinese Sunway TaihuLight is now ranked at number 2. The computer is developed by Chinese National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology (NRCPC) is installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, the computer clocks at 93 petaflops which is the same since its inception in June 2016.

3 Sierra

Unites States second fastest supercomputer and the world’s third fastest supercomputer Sierra is installed at Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The system is IBM built and produces 71.6 petaflops on HPL, Sierra’s architecture is almost similar to Summit, it has 4,320 nodes each one is powered by two Power9 CPUs coupled with 4 NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPUs, for system interconnectivity it uses the same Mellanox EDR InfiniBand.

4 Tianhe-2A or Milky Way-2A

The Tianhe-2A was ranked at number 2 earlier now it is moved down two spots, the computer had an upgrade recently which replaced its five years old Xeon Phi accelerators and custom built Matrix-2000 coprocessors. The new hardware installed on the system has significantly improved its performance from 33.0 petaflops to 61.4 petaflops while reducing its power consumption by 4%. The Chinese second fastest supercomputer Tianhe-2A was developed by Chinese National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) and its installed at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou, China.

5 AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure (ABCI)

Fujitsu built supercomputer is installed at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) Japan. Japan’s faster supercomputer is ranked at number 5 of the world. The computer is powered by 20-core Xeon Gold Processors along with NVIDIA Tesla v100 GPUs.

Top 10 shocking facts about Apple founder Steve Jobs

The rest of the 5 supercomputers on the list to make top 10 are Piz Daint, (Switzerland),(19.6 petaflops), Titan, (USA), (17.6 petaflops), Sequoia, (USA), (17.2 petaflops), Trinity, (USA), (14.1 petaflops) and Cori, (USA), (14.0 petaflops). These supercomputers are among the top ten’s list.

The USA has the most supercomputers in the world with six spots in the top ten, China has two spots while Japan and Switzerland have one spot each.
