The Election Commission of Pakistan said in a statement that the former ousted PM Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, and Captain (R) Safdar are not allowed to cast their votes on July 25.
Although, the law of country gives the right to the prisoners to cast their votes from the jail. But, the voting process of the prisoners was conducted on July 5.
As per the Election Commission’s statement, the convicted members of the Sharif family would not be allowed to exercise the right to cast the votes as the voting process for prisoners has already been carried out.
“The convicts can’t cast their votes while in jail, the Election act has no concessions for such a situation. Each clause of the Election Act is being implemented,” said an official representative of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Why Sharif Family members are in Jail
Accountability Court has announced jail for 10 years for Nawaz Sharif, 7 years for Maryam Nawaz and Captain (R) Safdar for 1 year. Also, 8 million pounds fine has been imposed on the Nawaz Sharif and 2 million pounds on Maryam Nawaz.
The Accountability Court has announced its verdict in Avenfield corruption reference filed by the National Accountability Court against the members of Sharif family following the order of Supreme Court of Pakistan in July 2017.
The anti-corruption court also ordered to confiscate the Avenfield apartments in the Central London owned by the Sharif family since 19s.
However, the review petition against the NAB court’s verdict filed by the lawyer of Mr. Sharif Khawaja Haris and other leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the Islamabad High Court and currently is in the hearing process.
