The jail authorities in Punjab have sounded the alarm bells as 89 prisoners in four major jails of the province were tested positive for the novel coronavirus, with the province already leading at 2,850 cases of the virus.
According to the details, the coronavirus test results of the several other prisoners were yet to be released.
As per the details, at least 59 prisoners at Camp Jail in Lahore, or District Jail Lahore, tested positive for the virus, whereas 14, seven, and nine were tested positive for the deadly virus in Sialkot, Gujranwala, and Dera Ghazi Khan, respectively.
While sharing the details of the tests, the jail authorities said that the test results of 438 of the 527 prisoners in the Camp Jail in Lahore had been released. According to the details, out of them, 379 prisoners had tested negative for the novel coronavirus.
The authorities said that the remaining 1,500 prisoners were moved to other jails in the city.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Camp Jail reported its first case of the novel coronavirus when a prisoner — who had traveled from Italy to Lahore and was arrested in a drugs case — had tested positive on March 21.
