As per the news sources, United Motors will launch Mehran and Ravi lookalikes vehicles in Pakistan with a few alterations in the design to evade copyright issues.
As per Muhammad Afzal who is the United Motors General Manager Sales and Marketing
“The company will use Chinese technology to market its vehicles under the brand name of United. The local assembly of these vehicles will begin in the first half of 2018. Our car and pickup are not the copy of Suzuki brands. They are totally different and loaded with various attractive features and safety standards.”
But let us see how much difference will be in United’s new car and Suzuki Mehran.
There will be a slight difference in design, maybe different headlights, different bumpers, different fuel tank, speedometer but technically both the cars will be almost same. United Motors will add different security features accessories in the car which includes roof rails and spoilers that will make the exterior appear different from the traditional Suzuki Mehran. In the interior also there is a better dashboard, instrument panel, & a changed steering wheel.
The logo on the steering wheel of the car is of Jiangnan which is a subsidiary of Zotye Auto in China. Zotye Auto own the intellectual property rights to Alto Mehran second generation. Jiangnan TT does not produce cars in China anymore but it introduced many changes like proper rear suspension with coil springs and dampers, which is not present in Suzuki Mehran second generation. It is not confirmed yet if United new car will have these features or not.
Now the question is when United Motors will introduce the car in Pakistan. As it is heard that Pak Suzuki is ending Mehran production & will replace it with Alto in 2019. So United might introduce its car after Suzuki Mehran completely dies, or it might launch it in 2018, this is yet not known.
The prices of United Motors car will be in between PKR 6 lacs to PKR 7 lacs. This is assumed because Mr.Afzal said that the car will be very affordable.
Other than Mehran the CNG auto rickshaw maker Sazgar is planning to work with a Chinese company to set up an assembly plant in Pakistan. As of yet there is knowing about Sazgar’s Chinese partner, but it might also launch another version of Chinese Mehran in Pakistan.
As Suzuki Mehran might soon die in Pakistan, it is important that companies introduce a somewhat similar affordable car in Pakistan. Even if the cars looked a bit inspired from Suzuki Mehran, it doesn’t matter much as long as something slightly new & reasonable can be offered to the people of Pakistan. The truth is we need cars like Suzuki Mehran in Pakistan.
