For almost two years now we have been hearing that Pak Suzuki will soon replace Suzuki Mehran with 660cc Suzuki Alto and that Toyota is discontinuing its Corolla GLi and Xli models.
In 2016 a news appeared in a local newspaper that Pak Suzuki has made its plan to start Suzuki Alto 660cc local production from the year 2018 to replace its legendary 800cc Mehran. So clearly it was assumed that 2018 will be the last year of Suzuki Mehran production. It was in 1989 that the second generation Alto or Suzuki Mehran was introduced in Pakistan, at that time it was just of Rs 90,000. Over time it’s features have seem outdated but its affordable price has been a major attraction for the buyers.
Coming to Toyota, from early 2017 we are hearing that Toyota is discontinuing its Corolla GLi and Xli models. It was heard that in replacement of it, Toyota will launch a new 1300cc model. People believe the new model will compete with Honda City. It could be Yaris or Vios but more chance is that Toyota might just launch Toyota Vios 2018. Vios will be more luxurious, the stylish car in comparison to Yaris but in essence, both the car are quite similar, reminding us of Honda City & Civic. Then quite recently Toyota Indus closed the bookings for Corolla Gli & Xli models. All of this indicates that Toyota wants to discontinue Gli/Xli models & introduce a new car.
So we come to our point, will 2018 mark the end of legendary cars. Toyota Corolla Gli and Xli and Suzuki Mehran have been the most popular cars in Pakistan. The GLi and Xli variants of Corolla are expensive in comparison to Mehran but it is the comfort and luxury provided in these cars that have appealed the public for decades.
Similarly, Mehran is the most popular affordable car ever launched in Pakistan.

Now new companies are coming in Pakistan, investment is being done in auto sector but can any car or company reach the stature of Suzuki Mehran and Toyota Corolla Gli and Xli models?
