The commercial production of Alto 660cc will begin from next week as revealed by Pak Suzuki Motor Company Ltd (PSMCL). Suzuki Alto will replace Suzuki Mehran in the country as 800cc Suzuki Mehran VX and VXR is being discontinued by Pak Suzuki.
According to news reports, Suzuki has already given the parts supply schedules to the vendor and many of the orders have been delivered.
The new 660cc Alto will most probably be displayed at the Pakistan Auto Parts Show. The Auto show will be held in Karachi from 12th to 14th April.
As of yet, it is not clear as to the percentage of localized parts in the production of new Alto. According to a few vendors, the initial assembly would begin with at least 50% local parts that will with time increase with an increase in production.
This also indicates that the price of Alto will remain under pressure in case the rupee depreciation against the US dollar continues. In an effort to locally produce vehicles, the prices of those cars have continuously gone up since January 2018.
Also with the intro of Alto, the dependence on Mehran will reduce. Already the company has discontinued Mehran VX and VXR, thus it was essential that a new Suzuki car was launched in the market.
Mehran was an iconic car, and the most affordable one available in Pakistan. According to sources in the PSMCL, Pak Suzuki has accommodated around 80 percent of Mehran vendors to locally make Alto 660cc parts and accessories.
