Sony Patents Own Faceplates For PS5

PS5 Console Design

Sony has recently attracted attention again and again for its consistent action against third-party providers of faceplates. Now it is apparently clear why: Because a patent has been published that shows that the Japanese are probably planning their own faceplates to retrofit or beautify the PS5.

The PlayStation 5 is currently only available in a white version, but of course, that’s not a design that everyone who buys a PS5 will like. Some people want the console to be black or in a different color, and third-party manufacturers take advantage of this. They offer alternative designs that you can pin or stick on. However, Sony has acted with unusual consistency in the past few months.

Sony Publishes The Patent

Now a patent of the electronics giant has emerged or has been published, which shows that Sony is hoping for a piece of the faceplate cake itself. As OP Attack discovered, Sony applied for a patent last year, more precisely at the launch of the PlayStation 5. This application has now been granted, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) confirmed this property right last week.

This is not a real surprise, because shortly after the launch of the PS5, the (now former) Sony manager Matt MacLaurin indicated that a black edition of the PlayStation 5 could or even will come.

So it is no longer a question of whether alternative faceplates will come, but only one of when. You can only speculate about the latter at the moment, but it shouldn’t be too long before you can “dress” your Sony console in a different color. Because with a patent you also have every legal security to forbid competitors from similar or alternative solutions.
