The apex court on Tuesday gave the orders to seal ice cream units of Gourmet Food throughout the province of Punjab.
The court also called the owners of the Gourmet Food and GNN News channel on Wednesday along with the director general of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority.
The chief justice later passed the directives while hearing an application filed by the Director General of Punjab Food Authority (PFA)—Muhammad Usman at the supreme court Lahore Registry.
Muhammad Usman during the hearing described about the harmful bacteria that was identified in the samples of ice cream produced by Gourmet. He informed that the authority has confiscated the existing stock at the outlets of Gourmet and has disposed that off later.
The product is among the forty-seven ice cream brands and frozen desserts that has been declared unfit for human consumption by the PFA on Saturday.
He also told the court that the GNN News channel which is owned by the Gourmet group initiated his character assassination drive after his operation against the brand.
Upon this the chief justice said that such campaign was equivalent to contempt of court and said that why should not the channel be closed for some days or may be permanently.
But, the CJP instructed the authorities to analyse all products of Gourmet Foods for checking their quality other than sealing the units of the brand.
Mian Saqib Nisar also expressed displeasure over a phone call that was made to him on behalf of Gourmet Foods for asking a favour in the matter during the hearing proceedings.
