Russia has recently denied accepting cricket as a sport. It is pertinent to mention that the sport the country has refused to accept as one is followed by more than 2 billion people passionately.
The sports ministry of Russia declined a request of including cricket in its updated register of the official acknowledged or recognized sports.
Sadly, the update was issued on the 15th of July—a day following the dramatic victory of England in the World Cup against New Zealand.
Russia has also denied recognizing Thai Boxing in its sports register. Some of the games that are recognized in the country include Petanque, Mini-golf and draughts.
The exclusion of the games from the official sports register in no way means that they are subjected to getting a ban in the largest Asian nation, it is just that it deprives the cricket organizations of getting financial grants from the government.
The local cricket fraternity is not that happy with the decision, a member of the Moscow Cricket Sports Federation, however, is of the belief that the rejection was received owing to a faulty application that was submitted.
The local media was informed that the federation would again be applying next year for official recognition. Presently, the decision is being criticized extensively on social media
