Rawalpindi officially becomes a metropolitan city of Pakistan

The PTI-led provincial government of Punjab has decided to declare Rawalpindi as the metropolitan city of Pakistan and changed its status from Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) to the metropolitan corporation.

After declaring Rawalpindi the metropolitan city, the district council stands suspended and the property tax is expended to 24 union councils which were rural areas in the past.

As per the details, after delimitation for the elections of the local government under the Local Government Act 2019, the number of the union councils of Rawalpindi increase from 46 to 70.

On the other hand, as many as 24 rural areas have been converted into urban areas.

After the amendments in the Local Government Act, Rawalpindi having a population of more than 1.5 million will be declared a metropolitan city.
