Punjab to Import Sugar Owing to Shortage


The Punjab government has taken the decision of importing 600,000 tonnes of sugar that worths Rs.53 billion amid the current sugar crisis in Pakistan.

As per the shared details, the total production of the item in Punjab was 3 million metric tonnes during the 2020 harvest, along with 0.5 million metric tonnes of the former stock. But, the demand for the commodity in the province at the time was approximated at 3.8 million metric tonnes.

Many other regions which include Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir met their respective demand for the item from the products procured from Punjab.

It is anticipated that Punjab would be producing 3.3 to 3.4 million tonnes of the item this year, with a pre-existing stock of 38,000 metric tonnes.

The major reason that is linked to the surge in the sugar prices and of the prices in sugarcane is owing to the limited production and of the fact that the government has not been able to deal with the sugarcane contractor mafia.
