LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to enact legislation to take action against those who spread religious hatred on social media. In this regard, the Punjab government has also approached the federal government. The Punjab government has requested the federal government to amend the Cyber Act to empower the provincial government.
Talking to media in Lahore, Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat has said that the provincial government does not have the authority to take action against those who spread religious hatred. Raja Basharat said that 203 complaints were received regarding spreading religious hatred on social media during Muharram. The Punjab law minister said that the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) was allowed to take action against such persons on an ad hoc basis only during Muharram. He added that private members would also support a bill to change the rules.
