Earlier today, the government of Punjab announced the closure of 171 Sahulat Bazaars in the province. These bazaars will now be taken over by model bazaars.
As per the reports, the bazaars will be closed down in different phases. The closedown process will begin on the 8th of February.
The first phase will start from the 11th of January in which only 5 markets will be set up in every district. The newly established markets will be replaced by model bazaars from 24th January. In the new markets, the rates will be different and also, the markets will be smaller.
Moreover, the second phase will start from the 25th of January in which 4 more sahulat bazaars will be established in Lahore whereas 2 will be functional in other areas of the province. As per a government official, all these markets will shut down by Feb 8th.
Furthermore, he disclosed that in total, 32 model markets will be established out of which 10 will be in Lahore.
Sahulat Bazaars were set up in 2020 in Punjab in order to ensure that people could purchase daily use items at lesser and fixed prices.
