The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has announced a ban on soft and energy drinks within the premises and in 100 meters radius of educational institutions.
From August, 14 the ban will be imposed under the Punjab Educational Institutions Food Standards Regulations, 2017. The ban would strictly be implemented in all cafeterias, canteens and shops within and around the institutions.
PFA has also advised suppliers/vendors and manufacturers to comply with the regulations and does not supply soft drinks and energy drinks within 100-meter radiuses of educational institutions. PFA says it is the sole responsibility of manufacturers to restrict their suppliers and vendors from selling products that are under scrutiny.
After August 14, any breach or violation and negligence shall be treated with prosecution and fines against the concerned company, said DG PFA Noor-ul-Amin Mengal on Wednesday.
Mengal further highlighted adverse effects or soft drinks and said, in 120 countries sales of soft drinks are restricted since 2006. PFA scientific panel has approved the regulations 2017, grading the food supplied to educational institutions as red, yellow and green levels—
