Since PML-N came into power in 2013, PTV has faced Rs.3 billion loss. Now due to so much loss government of Pakistan is thinking to shut PTV World or else merge it with some other government-owned channel. Many meetings were going on between PTV officials and information ministry officials to discuss the future of PTV.
PTV directors were asked to make plans and bring up ideas for the restructuring of PTV. Mariyum Aurangzeb State Minister for Information is behind all this plan of saving PTV from completely losing its worth. Moreover, PM of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has applied for a post of managing director (MD) of PTV. This post was vacant for two years.
A local news agency confirmed that most of the official’s don’t want PTV World to close. Rafat Nazir PTV’s Controller In charge made a suggestion of airing PTV World programs in different countries like the UK and the USA.
Another thing revealed in this whole process was that information ministry every year allocates about Rs. 105 million to run the channel. The auditor general of Pakistan in the report of 2015-2016 said this money granted to the channel had irregularities and the channel was not even part of Information Ministry’s business. The funds had no approval by any authority.
PPP government launched this channel since then it has just been under loss. Having no MD for a couple of years made the channel suffer even more. Majority of PTV World employees are not legalized. Now Marriyum Aurangzeb wants to completely restructure PTV World if it doesn’t work the channel might close.
She said, “The plan will activate studios of regions and major PTV studios in provinces.”
The biggest government-owned channel, with probably the largest audience going through such a huge loss, proves that there are a lot of loopholes and irregularities going on, causing this loss.
