The amendments in the Punjab Local Government Act, 2019 have been approved on Tuesday by the provincial cabinet of Punjab.
A meeting of the provincial cabinet of Punjab was chaired by the Chief Minister of Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar in Lahore to take some important decisions.
Mian Aslam Iqbal—Information Minister of Punjab briefed the media on the decisions that cabinet took and asserted that in the light of amendments in the Punjab Local Government Act, 2019, only registered political parties on any electoral group will be eligible to participate in the elections of the local bodies.
He further said that the minorities will now be allowed to vote on the general seats as well.
The provincial cabinet has also approved the Punjab Village Panchayat and Neighborhood Councils Act, 2019, besides Punjab Demarcation of Local Areas Rules 2019.
The minister further said that after today’s amendments, a total of 455 local government will be formed across Pakistan’s most populated province.
The cabinet had also approved the changes in the Municipal Service Program of Punjab under which the local government will implement road construction and repair schemes throughout the province.
In today’s meeting, the provincial cabinet also decided to declare Lahore and Azerbaijan city of Nakhchivan as twin cities and signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard.
