PPP changes its election symbol from Arrow to Sword

Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) has decided to change its electoral symbol ‘Arrow’ with ‘Sword’. For the upcoming general elections 2018, PPP’s symbol will not be ‘Arrow’.

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will take up this petition by PPP, today on Tuesday. An application was filed by the senior PPP leader Nayyar Hussain Bukhari in the ECP after getting the approval by Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

It is important to mention here that PPP did conduct an election with sword symbol in 1970 and 1977. At the time of late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto sword was the electoral symbol of Pakistan People s Party (PPP)

After 1977 general elections sword symbol was removed from prescribed election symbols by Gen Ziaul Haq. In March 2010, Election Commission of Pakistan restored the sword symbol which was deleted previously.

In 2013 elections PPP was allotted with arrow election symbol but chances are that this year PPP will run the general elections 2018 with its historical ‘Sword’ symbol.

Pakistan General Elections 2018 will be conducted on July 25th this year. A spokesman for the Election Commission Chaudhry Nadeem Qasim said that it is the law that general elections are held within the 60 days after the end of present government’s term. Thus as per a senior Election Commission of Pakistan official,  “Since a single date for the polls is to be announced, the general election is supposed to be conducted before July 28.”

Caretaker Prime Minister was announced yesterday by leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah. Former chief justice Nasir Ul Mulk has been appointed as the Caretaker Prime Minister until general elections are held on July 25.
