PITB Launches E-Libraries in 20 Districts of Punjab

The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) have set up E-Libraries in twenty districts of Punjab along with the cooperation of Youth Affairs, Sports, Archaeology and Tourism Department (YASAT).

A central digital library has been established at the Punjab Information Technology Board date centre to give online access to e-Journals, full-text eBooks, online reference collection, Documentaries, Simulated videos, e-Thesis, Nobel Laureates collections and other local and international resources.

These libraries are built with the objective of coaching the e-reading and e-learning culture, for providing greater opportunities to the public at large for networking, exchanging of views, open access to free online resources and limited access to the members for subscribed resources and for keeping the youth engaged in healthy reading habits.

These libraries have been built in the following districts:

  1. Vehari
  2. Gujranwala
  3. Toba Tek Singh
  4. Gujrat
  5. Sheikhupura
  6. Lahore
  7. Sargodha
  8. Sahiwal
  9. Mianwali
  10. Rawalpindi
  11. Multan
  12. Rahim Yar Khan
  13. Muzaffargarh
  14. Okara
  15. Narowal
  16. Attock
  17. Faisalabad
  18. Bahawalpur
  19. Bhakhar
  20. Dera Ghazi Khan

Each library has got an auditorium with the capacity to accommodate seating for fifty users and is provided with the multimedia facility, e-Rozgar room with sixteen computers, a digital library access room with ten computers, e-learn facility, beautiful workbenches and five tables.

A security system that is based on electromagnetic has also been installed in each library for the safeguard of resources.

Each library is provided with around three thousand high-quality print books, magazines and documentaries in an air-conditioned environment with an access to the online digital library resources.

The centralized digital library established at the PITB data centre gives access to above fifty thousand e-books, documentaries, e-thesis, audios, national and international e-newspapers, videos, e-magazines and journals, books, reference books, data sets and much more and that too via friendly searching.

This is the only library in the entire country to provide access to Oxford Reference Online, Noble Laureates Presentations, Cambridge Champions and Meet the mentor-like resources.

Union Catalogue of Libraries in Punjab has been designed under the directions of Dr Umar Saif—Chairman PITB for providing one window access to bibliographic data of more than a million books available in the Punjab Libraries.
