In Pakistan, a physician heading a Phase III clinical trial for a Chinese coronavirus vaccine candidate has asked people to volunteer for the trial in order to overcome the hesitation in the country to immunization programs.
For Ad5-nCoV, Pakistan launched a trial. It is a vaccine candidate co-developed by CanSino Biologics and a Chinese military-backed research unit. It is a mega-scale trial in Pakistan which has been surrounded by misinformation.
According to the details, the trial headed by Ejaz A. Khan at Islamabad’s Shifa International Hospital said, “There are lots of challenges whenever you introduce something new and a vaccine is part of it. Vaccine hesitancy, unfortunately, with a country like Pakistan is also pretty much high.”
Adding, “People should come and volunteer; people should not be hesitant. They can take part and become part of the team which is fighting Covid-19.”
Shifa International is amongst the first of five trial sites in Pakistan. The hospital is using a building earlier used for Covid-19 testing for the trial.
Volunteers come via appointment and then are recruited via NGOs, hospitals, and corporations. It is important that volunteers are above 18 and have not tested positive for coronavirus nor have immune deficiencies. Also, volunteers should not be pregnant for the duration of the trial. Rs2,000 compensation for travel and food expenses given to the volunteers.
