PEMRA Warns Many Channels Against Broadcasting Foreign Content

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has warned the private television channels from on-airing programmes that are a production of international bodies like BBC, Deutsche Welle (DW) and Voice of America (VOA).

The ban directions have been sent both to Express-News and AAJ TV via two separate letters, persuading the media franchises to take off the programmes on an immediate basis.

As per one of the letters Express-News was on-airing a programme captioned “DW Sawal” produced by Deutsche Welle—an International Broadcaster of Germany, without seeking the approval of the media regulator.

Furthermore, orders were given to AAJ TV for avoiding the broadcasting or re-broadcasting of two programmes by the foreign entities, titled as the “View 360” produced by Voice of America and “Sairbeen” produced by BBC.

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority said that the mentioned channels had been broadcasting the programmes unlawfully without any approval.

As per the order issued by PEMRA, the competent authority practising its given powers provided in Section 27(a) of the PEMRA Ordinance 2002 as amended by PEMRA (Amendment) Act 2007, bans the broadcast or re-broadcast of these programmes with an immediate effect.

The media watchdog also gave a warning that in case of non-compliance with the prohibition directions, the authority shall act against the aforementioned channels under the Section 30 of the PEMRA Ordinance 2002.
