The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has given the final warning to forty-five television channels to telecast Azaan five times a day.
PEMRA warned to these TV channels that if they did not start airing Azaan on an immediate basis five times daily their licenses would be cancelled.
The warning has been issued following the Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) orders on 9th of May to the TV channels to broadcast Azaan five times a day.
A single bench including Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui had given the directions while listening to a petition against the breaking of the code of conduct for morning shows and the Ramzan transmission on-aired by some television channels.
During the hearing session, Justice Siddiqui mentioned that no one would be permitted to on-air “circus” and “Neelam Ghar” during the holy month of Ramazan. He even said that it is the responsibility of the government to make sure to safeguard the “Islamic identity and beliefs”.
Justice Siddiqui also remarked that Azaan is the biggest breaking news of all, but television channels do not on-air it and keep on playing music, advertisements and dance at the time of prayers.
The court has instructed PEMRA to submit a detailed report regarding this matter.
Earlier PEMRA has issued a warning to some channels for broadcasting foreign content and for the unlawful telecast of some programmes produced by foreign entities.
