The National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad has witnessed a new polio case observed in Tehsil Sarai Naurang of District Lakki Marwat and registered as the first national Polio case of the calendar year 2020.
According to the watchdog, Pakistan has registered 136 Poliovirus cases last year and unfortunately registered another case in 2020. The notification issued by the organization says the wild poliovirus has been isolated from the stool sample of a year old male child from the Union Council Ahmedzai, Tehsil Sarai Naurang, District Lakki Marwat.
The vaccination history of the child tells us, “The vaccination history of the family is that of refusal with the only dose of essential immunization and three doses of SIAs as per recall.”
It is pertinent to mention that Lakki Marwat district is a rural area in Pakistan where the literacy rate is below 32% as the closest district is Bannu where the literacy rate is 32.11%. It was also reported earlier that there was an increase in the number of people refuse to administer Polio vaccination to their child in Khayber Pakhtunkhwa KP based on the rumours spreading not only in Pakistan but around the world.
The U.S. has also issued a travel warning for Polio-endemic Asian countries including Pakistan a week ago. Pakistan government has been tirelessly working to eradicate the Poliovirus from the country by running country-wide door-to-door campaigns.
