Pakistan tops in censorship of Facebook content. From January to June 2019, Facebook has restricted access to more than 5000 pages, posts and other content in Pakistan. This is the highest content restriction in the world. Following Pakistan is Mexico with 4,727 content restrictions.
During the reported period, the amount of content restricted access in Pakistan increased by over 30%. 5690 items were restricted in comparison to 4174 from the second half of 2018, as per the Facebook Transparency Report.
5376 posts, 128 pages and groups, 6 profiles and 2 comments have been restricted by Facebook for access in Pakistan. Similarly, on Instagram 178 items were restricted within Pakistan, out of them 171 are posts while 7 are profiles.
Facebook has restricted access in Pakistan to content reported by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for “allegedly violating local laws prohibiting blasphemy, anti-judiciary content, defamation, and condemnation of the country’s independence”.
The report further said, “Upon a routine review of our actions, we determined that we restricted access to 17 items in error during this period, including 11 items that should have been deleted for violating the Community Standards and six items on which we should have taken no action. We have corrected these mistakes.”
