A complete ban has been proposed by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR) on potatoes export. This ban has started immediately and it will be in place till 31st December 2020.
A summary has been forwarded by the Ministry of Commerce to the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet for approval.
In the meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on 9th September 2020, the approval would be given.
The Imports and Exports (Control) Act 1950’s Section 3(1) gives the federal government authority to forbid, restrict, or control the import and export from Pakistan of goods.
The cabinet is asked to ban potato export till 31st December 2020, as MNFSR proposed. Also, the export shipments of the potatoes that had confirmed L/C, B/L, or Airway Bill may be excused from the proposed ban.
The Federal Cabinet in the meeting on 28th April 2020 decided to completely ban the export of the edible items that are consumed by common people.
Since Feb 2020, the Agriculture Department of Punjab has been requesting the MNFSR to take the essential policy measures about the export of potato so that the price of the product and its supply is maintained in the local market.
The total demand in Pakistan for potato is around 3.9 million tons. Out of this 3.02 million tons is consumed as food while the rest is used as seed.
