Pakistan Declared Least Competitive Country in Travel & Tourism in South Asia


According to the Travel and Tourism Competitive Report published by the World Economic Forum, Pakistan is ranked as the least competitive country in travel and tourism in South Asia.

Pakistan was placed at the bottom of the Asia-Pacific Travel and Tourism (T&T) Competitive Index 2019 rankings, in the report. Out of 140 countries, Pakistan ranked at 121st position. Back in 2017, Pakistan stood at 124th position.

It was emphasized in the report that Pakistan requires huge improvement in competitiveness to improve its ranking.

The report said that in the human resources and labor market Pakistan has improved, as Singapore stood at the top spot in this department, in the Asia-Pacific region.

Out of all the countries in Asia, Japan is the most competitive travel and tourism country. It ranked fourth worldwide, considering the fact that the country has witnessed a boom in global tourists arrivals and receipts. In Asia-Pacific, China is the largest travel and tourism economy and it is 13th most competitive worldwide. The Philippines ranked at 75th position globally, moving up four positions.

South Asia is lacking behind in infrastructure, as per the report. Other key weaknesses include global openness, safety issues, health and hygiene, and low ICT readiness.
