The Pak government has decided to waive off the visa fee of the Chinese CPEC workers. The 2,511 Chinese nationals who are working on different development projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will not need to submit visa fee.

This is a one-time waiver for the Chinese nationals to convert their visit visa to work visa. Prime Minister Imran Khan has permitted to table this issue in the upcoming federal cabinet meeting for approval.

The cabinet granted approval for a one-time waiver of visa fee for Chinese nationals, allowing them to change their visit visas to work visas.

In the policy, the visas that are issued by missions are not included as they can not be changed in Pakistan. Chinese nationals will not have to go back to China after the expiry of their visas. They would get the extension in Pakistan.

In May 2019, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government granted a one-time dispensation to 2,511 Chinese nationals. The reason for this was that the Chinese Embassy said that if the workers went back to China to get their visas changed it would delay the construction work.

It is pertinent to mention here that the $60 billion CPEC project is a key project for both China and Pakistan.
