Pakistan, Australia to Boost Trade Ties

Sardar Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera—the Commerce Secretary on Friday said that the trade ties between Pakistan and Australia could not achieve its potential and has remained stationary past the years majorly because of the tariff differential that exports experienced in the Australian market.

While talking to the Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan—Dr Geoffrey Shaw at the commerce ministry, Sukhera mentioned that the Australian side should take the request of Pakistan in consideration for preferential treatment via a PTA/FTA or change of the status of country in the Australian System of Tariff Preferences so that Pakistan could get benefit in the Australian market.

He also said that the need for collaborations between the business communities of both the states, especially in the areas of cattle and dairy farming and services sectors exists.

He also emphasized on the investment opportunities generating as a result of the conclusion of China Pakistan Free Trade Agreement—CPFTA and development of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor—CPEC.

On the occasion, the high commissioner agreed that the cooperation between the two states should be boosted via joint ventures and the transfer of technology.

He also informed about the various projects being undertaken by the government of Australia in Pakistan for the purpose of capacity building.
