After all the preliminary information, the smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has now confirmed its new partnership with camera specialists Hasselblad: The OnePlus 9 with the new smartphone camera technology is also being prepared for the launch on March 23rd.
OnePlus had already announced it: For March 8th, the company had announced further details after their first “Moonshot” teaser for the OnePlus 9, now after all the leaks of the past weeks we reported the facts from the manufacturer are available today. And that all sounds very interesting.
The most important thing: OnePlus has confirmed the long-rumoured partnership with Hasselblad. The Hasselblad camera specialists are known for finding solutions where others only see problems – and so in the 1960s, they built a special Hasselblad for the Apollo astronauts and their first moon landing.
OnePlus has now revealed what it is hoping for the partnership. This is initially set to run for three years, with OnePlus planning to invest 150 million US dollars in the expansion of smartphone photography.
OnePlus has always put a premium user experience above everything else. From 2021 we will do everything we can to significantly improve the smartphone camera experience for our users – with the expertise of a truly legendary partner like Hasselblad,” says Pete Lau, founder and CEO from OnePlus. “With OnePlus’ world-class hardware and computational photography and Hasselblad’s rich aesthetic knowledge in traditional photography, I am confident that the OnePlus 9 Series will be a huge leap forward in our ability to deliver a premium flagship camera.”
New color matching and sensor calibration
Of course, it’s about building better smartphone cameras that are simpler for users. According to the announcement, this includes software improvements for color matching and better sensor calibrations. The new solution will be called “Natural Color Calibration with Hasselblad” and will be offered specifically for future OnePlus devices, starting with the OnePlus 9 series. There will also be a Hasselblad Pro mode that allows users to adjust ISO, focus, exposure times and more in a new user interface and use a 12-bit RAW format.
“Hasselblad believes in the power of images and our mission is to push the boundaries of image technology. With that in mind, Hasselblad is determined to partner with OnePlus, an innovative company that shares the same vision and passion for technology. Through the partnership With OnePlus, we hope to put Hasselblad’s iconic design and outstanding image quality in the hands of more people and share our passion for incredible photography, “said Jon Diele, Hasselblad Vice President.
The announcement also provides some more details about the new technology. So the OnePlus 9 series will get a bespoke Sony IMX789 sensor. The “Hasselblad Camera for Mobile” will support HDR video recording, 4K 120fps and 8K 30fps. The actual OnePlus 9 launch event will take place on March 23rd.
