Nintendo Switch Gets An Update With Online Expansion Pack

Nintendo Switch

With the 13.1.0 update, the Japanese are clearing the way for the new Nintendo Switch Online expansion pack, which is now available. It grants access to many Nintendo 64 classics, Sega Mega Drive games, and content for Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

While the previous firmware update 13.0 for the Nintendo Switch brought support for Bluetooth headphones and speakers, the Japanese company is now laying the foundation for expanding its online service. The recently released version 13.1.0 is required to use the expansion package, which is available immediately and is only available as a complete package with classic online membership at a total price of 39.99 euros per year. The family package for up to eight Nintendo accounts, on the other hand, costs 69.99 euros.

Retro gaming package and exclusive content for 20 euros

In comparison, the price is thus doubled. While for the otherwise usual 19.99 euros (12 months) in many games, the online multiplay mode, saving of saved games in the cloud, the use of the Nintendo Switch Online app, and access to NES and Super Nintendo titles is possible the extension package gives the subscription further advantages. Every Nintendo fan has to decide for himself whether these are worth a surcharge of 20 euros per year.

As of today’s launch, there are nine N64 games ready for retro fans, including Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Lylat Wars. Likewise, many Sega Mega Drive titles are added to the package, for example, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Ecco The Dolphin, and Streets of Rage 2. Other classic games should follow soon, according to Nintendo. For many, the “Happy Home Paradise” expansion for Animal Crossing: New Horizons should also be a reason to switch to the more expensive membership.

Aside from supporting the Nintendo Switch Online expansion pack, the software update 13.1.0 brings, as usual, general improvements to the system stability “to improve the gaming experience”. The download takes place via the known device settings.
