On the federal government’s request, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) set a hearing to increase the country’s power tariff. The increase is a hefty amount by Rs. 1.95 per unit, and the hearing will start today.
As per the authorities, the increase in tariff is due to rising circular debt. The federal cabinet has already approved the increase in tariff.
The energy ministry of Pakistan earlier increases the electricity tariffs by Rs. 1.95 per unit, claiming it is due to a hefty circular debt.
It is said that the price was suspected to increase by Rs. 2.18 per unit. But it would increase the burden on the masses. So, the government only increased a little portion.
It is further said by the authorities that due to the heavy debts in the energy sector, the government had no other option but to expedite clearing off the payables.
