The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has called for public opinion on the change in K-Electric’s electricity distribution license.
According to the NEPRA statement, public opinion has been sought regarding the exclusive rights of electricity distribution in K-Electric license. NEPRA says K-Electric neither expanded nor upgraded the distribution system. K-Electric customers suffer from prolonged load shedding, safety issues, and over-billing.
Under the NEPRA Act, it is in the public interest to change the license of K-Electric. The change in the license will create a competitive environment for power supply. The change in the license will reduce the cost of electricity and improve the quality of service.
According to details, the notice has been issued by the authority which emphasizes the authority and public interest, “Section 26 of the Nepra Act empowers the Authority to amend or vary the conditions of any license issued under the Nepra Act in the public interest. In order to encourage competition for the provision of electric power services in Karachi, to enhance efficiency, to ensure better price, quality of service, the choice for consumers, and to regularize the resale/distribution of electric power business, it is in the public interest to modify the terms of distribution license of K-Electric, the notice revealed.”
