As per the orders of the federal government about extension in the deadline for the mobile phone verification under the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s Device Identification Registration Blocking System (DIRBS), all the mobile phones which are already active on the cellular mobile networks within the country (Pakistan) by January 15 this year would remain functional without any service interruption.
Even the non-complaint mobile phones in function before this date would be tied to these numbers and would remain functional until the useful life of the mobile phone.
PTA developed DIRBS is in accordance with the Telecom policy 2015, issued by the Ministry of Information Technology & Telecom, section 9.6 with the objective of restraining the bogus cellular devices usage, safeguarding the consumer interest and discouraging the thefts of mobile phones.
Earlier, PTA set the last date for registration of mobile phones using this system on December 1st. It was required that one better get their phone registered until then.
As per the previous instructions, the authority was to start barring the unauthorized and unverified mobile phones. But now the deadline has been delayed until the 15th of January.
The status of a mobile phone by the Pakistani users could be learnt by sending a 15-digit IMEI number through SMS to 8484. It could also be checked on the website link DIRBS.PTA.gov.pk or simply by downloading the mobile phone application.
