The Main Line-1 (ML-1) project of Pakistan Railways would be opening up job opportunities for the technical and non-technical workforce. Under the ML-1 project, Peshawar-Karachi track is to be upgraded.

The project is being implemented as part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which experts’ belief that would not just bring revolution in the Pakistan Railways but would also prove revolutionary for the entire region, as informed by an official in the Ministry on Wednesday.

He said that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) had already been inked between Pakistan Railways and the government of China during the latest visit of the Prime Minister—Imran Khan to China.

While providing details of the project, the official said that the development of the Main Line-1 project would include fencing on both sides, laying of a new track from Peshawar to Karachi and the repair of bridges.

The project would be eradicating all the unmanned level crossing on the railway network of the Main Line-1 project which would curb the accidents of trains, the official further said.

He said that the ML-1 project would be finished in 3 phases and after the completion of the project, the minimum speed of the train would be 180 kilometres per hour.

He added that the present government is bent on managing the affairs of Pakistan Railways in a transparent manner.

Unfortunately, he said the earlier government bought engines from abroad and also got commissions on the deal, keeping aside the national interests.

The official also said that the scope of the project includes the induction of 50 locomotives, three hundred passenger coaches and 2,000 freight wagons and the up gradation of the Walton Training Academy.

The official said that with the completion of the ML-1 project would lead to increased freight volumes of the Pakistan Railways and would help in strengthening the national economy.
