It has been reported that 2018 will be a year of bad earthquakes as predicted by scientists. The reason for it is that Earth is slowing down. The University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Montana at Missoula scientists have presented their research which focuses on earthquake trends in history and connects earth’s slowing down with increasing number of major earthquakes.

Usually, the Earth’s rotation is consistent but there are brief spells where Earth rotates slower than the normal speed. The change is not at all prominent and it just changes the length of day by milliseconds. This does not last long and Earth rotates back at normal speed. As per researchers in this period the Earthquakes with magnitude of 7 and above get frequent.

Study co-author Roger Bilham said, “Next year we should see a significant increase in numbers of severe earthquakes. We have had it easy this year. So far we have only had about six severe earthquakes. We could easily have 20 a year starting in 2018.”
