Microsoft Fixes Bug In Windows 10 Automatic Security Updates

Azure

Microsoft has now resolved a long-standing problem for Windows 10 for Business. Due to a bug in the Windows Update function, users were unable to receive automatic security updates via Azure Virtual Desktops.

It was reported earlier, highlighting the specific problem facing corporate customers with Windows 10 and Azure Virtual Desktops at the beginning of July. After a number of glitches and security issues with the Microsoft Azure cloud offering, it became known that a bug was blocking automatic security updates. This not only resulted in a few sensitive security loopholes but also a problem in the security mechanism.

Microsoft reported this in a support document:

  • Azure Virtual Desktops may not be able to be updated through Windows Server Update Services.
  • Manual download and installation of security updates is possible and may be necessary.

This problem prevented Azure Virtual Desktops devices from downloading and installing the latest security updates through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), so the only way to do this was to manually install them. However, this was not apparent to the user, there was no direct error message. You could only see the status and the missing updates if you called up the update function via the settings app.

Only after the group had confirmed the error in July, the companies were able to make do with an interim solution. The problem affects both client (Windows 10 Enterprise Multisession, Version 1909) and server platforms (Windows Server Multisession, Version 1909).

Bad communication

Now there is an update that fixes the bug that blocked the updates via WSUS. Or: The update was rolled out a few weeks ago, but Microsoft has only now changed the documentation in the Windows Health Dashboard to this effect, according to the Bleeping Computer. There the problem is now listed as resolved, with the date October 6th. Previously, the group had not reported anything about the special bug fix.
