Merlin Entertainments to Open first LEGOLAND Park in South Korea by 2022


Gangwon Provincial government of South Korea and Merlin Entertainments a British company that specializes in location based entertainment inked an agreement to build a new LEGOLAND Park in South Korea which is scheduled to open by 2022.

LEGOLAND Korea will be built on the Island of Hajungdo in Chuncheon, the location is roughly one hour drive from the east of Seoul and within two-hour drive away from 24 million people looking for world class entertainment, reported Business Korea.

Merlin Entertainments will build a full-scale theme park resort which will have a fully themed LEGOLAND hotel when opened in 2022. The location will provide jobs to 1600 people and it will elevate the economic condition of Chuncheon and surrounding areas.

The estimated cost of the resort including the on-site accommodation is expected to hit 290 billion won ($258 million). Merlin will invest 210 billion won for developing and maintaining the resort and it will be fully owned by Merlin Entertainments according to the details.

LL Developments, the investment department of Gangwon province will add the rest of the investment roughly $71 million. The additional investments for local infrastructure surrounding the resort will come from the regional, local and national governments.

LEGOLAND Park will hit the 10th mark after opening this theme park in South Korea followed by LEGOLAND New York which is scheduled to open in 2020. LEGOLAND is focused to build 20 LEGOLAND parks across the world, for this purpose, the company is in talks with China to open one in the country of 1.5 billion.

The Chief Executive Officer LEGOLAND, Nick Varney said, “It’s been long in gestation, but I’m delighted that we are now in a position to move forward with opening LEGOLAND Korea Resort. We know Koreans love theme parks and love LEGO, and together with the Gangwon authorities, we have already established an attractive and well-connected site in Chuncheon. We look forward to accelerating progress with our partners who have contributed significantly with funding and infrastructural support, and to welcoming our first guests to LEGOLAND Korea Resort.”

In order to develop the infrastructure in the region, the Korean government, Gangwon province and Chuncheon city have already collaborated and invested in building a new bridge to Hajungdo Island and planned further developments on the island. LEGO Group introduced LEGO brand in Korea back in 1984, since then, the brand has been a favorite brand of toys in Korea, and South Korea has become the third largest market of LEGO Group in Asia Pacific. Merlin also owns a SEA LIFE Centre in Busan, South Korea.
