MediaTek will launch new 7nm process 5G SoC Helio X Series this year

There are three major premium chips available on the market including Exynos 9820, Kirin 980 and Snapdragon 855, and when it comes to affordability MediaTek becomes the first choice for manufacturers.

However, MediaTek is also focusing on producing premium chips now; the company is reportedly working on a premium chip series which is based on 7nm process and supports 5G network simultaneously. The chip supposedly to surpass the current flagship SoC Helio P90.

MediaTek released Helio P90 SoC December last year, which is based on 12nm process and it introduced A75 first on MTK platform. The performance of Helio P90 matched Snapdragon’s 710 with integrated PowerVR, GM 9446 GPU and APU 2.0.

The vice president of MediaTek’s sales and business development, Europe and United States, Finbarr Moynihan said that the coming chipset is well positioned for high-end smartphones. However, he did not confirm when MediaTek is launching new Helio X-series.

According to MediaTek, the new processor will have 5G network capability, this also indicates that MediaTek is not likely to integrate the 5G baseband at the SoC level but it will use the Helio M70 5G baseband, which was earlier announced to be launched by the early 2019.

Intel focused on surpassing Qualcomm in 5G chipsets

On the other hand, Qualcomm’s first 5G enabled SoC will be released no earlier than the first half of the next year. During the MediaTek Helio P90 release event the company told reporters that their next-generation chip will add cortex A76 architecture and its should be 7nm chipset.

MediaTek is well known in entry and mid-range smartphones but changing technology demands even more, the company is now expanding its expertise over 5G and latest architectures.
