The Provincial government of Punjab has decided to provide free meals regularly to the less fortunate folks of society in the provincial capital, Lahore. The government has decided to offer these communal meals (called as Madni Free Dastarkhawans), permanently. The objective is to look after the survival necessity of poor individuals.
This gesture is not new in Punjab, during Ramzan these free Dastarkhawans were also made available. Abdullah Khan Sumba, Commissioner Lahore Division asked the concerned departments to take an active part in making this a permanent feature of Lahore. May it be Ramzan or not the food will be continuously supplied to the deprived.
He underlined the fact that Lahore is the second most populated city with an increasing population of above twelve million individuals which clearly hints also about the increase in the number of underprivileged.
According to him, thirty-five free Dastarkhawans were not enough to cater the city’s need. He advised all the assistant commissioners to hold meetings with their specific area benefactors and donors for facilities to establish communal meals the entire year.
The Commissioner appreciated and praised Silani Welfare Trust for successively maintaining free dastarkhawans in such an organized manner and encouraged them to increase the number of more dastarkhawans. He guaranteed his full support with the trust’s management.
He further added that the administration is willing to provide a proper place for the ‘Roti Bank’ to Silani Welfare Trust, without charges, a facility of packed food items for the needy families who wishes to eat somewhere privately, rather than in public places.
