Lahore has been ranked the most polluted city in the world. It has the worst air quality as its air quality went up to ‘hazardous’. The Air Quality Index (AQI) oscillates between 250 and 300.
This compelled the Punjab government to close all the public and private schools in Lahore, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad today. According to an official notification by the Punjab School Education Department, this is due to the deteriorating air quality.
The international monitoring agency, AirVisual, stated that the air quality in Lahore and adjoining areas is unhealthy both for humans and animals. AQI readings ranging between 169 and 380 have been recorded in different areas of Lahore and surrounding districts, as per the data.
The air quality of Lahore is 19 times worse than what is considered to be safe, as the atmospheric particulate reading of the city was recorded as 195 microgrammes per meter cubed. What this means is that particles that are less than 3% of the diameter of human hair have polluted the atmosphere.
As per the experts, these particles stay in the air for a longer period of time. This enhances the chance of them being inhaled both by humans and animals.
There are many studies that have linked exposure to fine atmospheric particles and premature deaths due to heart and lung diseases.
