In accordance with the verdicts issued by the Supreme Court, the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has placed a ban on the manufacturing, sale and import of the Chinese Salt (Ajinomoto).

Chinese Salt or Ajinomoto or Monosodium glutamate is a sodium salt. It is used extensively in Chinese dishes. It is available as a salt and is also found in many sauces including the barbecue sauce. It is also present in frozen and canned foods. It is used as a flavour enhancer in the Chinese cuisines.

As per a study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, ingestion of Chinese Salt in greater amounts leads to a higher risk of getting metabolic syndrome—which includes a number of issues like high blood pressure, excess body fat, high cholesterol and high blood sugar.

The FDA recognizes the Monosodium glutamate as “generally safe” however, a wide range of reports identifying unfavourable side effects from the salt have appeared in the light.

The Food and Drug Administration calls MSG safe only if it is utilized in ideal amount.

Azam Khan—the Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)has issued directives to the administrative heads of every district to start acting immediately against the ones who manufacture, sell or import the Chinese Salt within their dominion, as per a statement issued by the provincial government on Wednesday.

The statement further read that a three-day campaign should be initiated and must be carried out throughout the province for making sure that the Chinese salt is removed from the shelves while the general public is provided with the information of its effects in detail.

The statement further mentioned that Azam Khan directed the additional chief secretary for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to practise the same campaign throughout the tribal areas including all the political agents.

The statement also read that the concerned authorities have also been directed to take strict action against the ones who violate the court orders.
