Karachi Starts Crackdown Against Street Beggars

A new crackdown by Karachi administration has been launched against the begging mafia, in the drive three major departments in Karachi are involved which would be concluded in phases in order to discourage the ‘professional beggary’.

The crackdown against the professional beggary including children and transgender persons was launched by Specialised Unit Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC), District Police from Tuesday which is also being assisted by the Sindh Child Protection Authority, as per the report.

According to Karachi police, the child beggars will be handed over the Sindh Child Protection Authority, and the operation will be extended to all areas of the metropolis in Karachi. According to the details, legal cases under section 9/10 will be registered against the professional beggars.

During the first phase of the crackdown, as many as 21 beggars have been rounded up in Karachi’s South Zone besides registration of 10 fresh cases against them.

Sources told that 2 beggars have been arrested from Clifton area, one from Gizri, two from Darakhshan, one from Saddar, one from Defence and one by women police. Two more beggars were arrested by AVCC specialised unit officers in Karachi. The arrested beggars are now being prosecuted under section 9/10.
