The Italian government has permitted Pakistani nationals to acquire seasonal and non-seasonal work visas for the year 2020-21. The announcement was made regarding this in the annual schedule of a work visa named ‘Decreto-Flussi’.
According to the report, the Italian government would issue over 30,000 work visas to the nationals from some of the non-EU countries which includes Pakistan. This opportunity can be availed by Pakistani workers in agriculture, tourism, construction, and freight forwarding sectors.
After a gap of two years, Pakistan has been included in the category of visas. This has taken place after a continued effort by the Pakistan Embassy in Rome.
Ambassador Jauhar Saleem stated that Italy hosts the biggest Pakistani diaspora in the European Union following Brexit. They sent more than $142 million in remittances in 2019-2020. He said that Pakistani people in Italy had been asking for the re-inclusion of Pakistan in the list of countries eligible for seasonal visas.
He said that Pakistani workers in the Italian market are increasing consistently primarily in the agricultural sector.
The expectations are that under the present scheme, hundreds of Pakistani workers will get employment in Italy.
Earlier on, the Pakistani Embassy assisted thousands of undocumented Pakistani workers in Italy to acquire legal status via a scheme launched by the Italian government in June 2020.
