It is a right time to prepare for the next battlefield—and that battlefield is space, said the Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence.
The US authorities have announced to create a space force by 2020, Al Jazeera reported. The Americans took this decision to protect its satellites and spacecraft from the attacks. It will be a first new branch of the American military since 1947.
But the question is, who will the United States be competing against? Is it an initiative of a new space race?
The president of the United States, Donald Trump wants the Congress to vote “yes” to the plan and show its agreement to the additional funding of $8 billion.
Mr. Trump is been pushing for the creation of the new space force for months. He talks about it often in several rallies and gatherings. “We may even have a space force,” he said several times.
Now the Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence said: “Well, too often, the previous administrations have neglected the growing security threats that are emerging in space, President Trump stated clearly and forcefully. Space is, in his words, a warfighting domain just like land, air, and sea. The vision of the US President will become the reality.”
The new force will be created to protect the satellites in the space from the attack which provides vital services like communication. It can also protect the spy satellites which directs the United States’ military operations.
It is pertinent to mention here that in 1983, President Ronald Reagan called for a space-based Missile Defence System after Congress demanded the establishment of the new space force, but that suggested programme never go beyond the research phase.
“We are in complete alignment with the President’s concerned about protecting our assets in space,” said the U.S. Defence Secretary.
