Hunza Valley becomes first Plastic Free District of Pakistan


Adviser to the PM on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam revealed that the breathtaking Hunza Valley has become the first plastic free district of Pakistan.

Furthermore, Aslam said that the success of this project will be replicated in other provinces and Islamabad as well.

While addressing a ceremony held at Altit Hunza, Aslam said,  “Hunza has become the first district in Asia to be plastic-bag free. The people of Hunza deserve congratulations for implementing the ban. I hope they will continue cooperating with the administration to keep the city clean and free of plastic bags.”

He said that Hunza has been declared a plastic-free zone. In the next four months, the government will replicate it in Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad.

A formal imposition order of Section-144 was read out on the use of plastic shopper bags. Also after the ceremony, 10,000 cloth bags were distributed among the people.

Furthermore, he said that the government will legislate in order to make the federal capital and the four provinces plastic-bag free. He added, that the Spring Blossom Festival will mark the start of the spring season in which locals will participate in traditional dresses and dance to local tunes.

Administration of Hunza district has asked traders to use up the present stock of shopping bags by 20th April.

A district administration circular stated, “Plastic bags are detrimental to the natural environment and human health. All the traders dealing in plastic bags should end their stock by April 20.”
